Europe is facing relatively high inflation and weak economy. Where is the ECB's monetary policy headed?
Jean-Claude Trichet, ECB former president, had a Dialogue with SFC journalist recently in Bund Summit 2024. He said “the work of fighting inflation is not achieved. A lot of our work has to be done. The euro area core inflation in August remains at 2.8% at a level which is significant higher than 2%.”
All taken into account, Trichet has confidence that the central banks will continue to do what is necessary to give full credibility to their own target and to their own definition of price stability.
“We have a consensus on the definition of price stability at the global level. That is something which of course helps considerably anchoring expectations,” he added. “In the medium term, 2% is the expectation that must have in mind. ”
